If you’ve been using HYPER-V VM’s for sometime for your production and testing purpose you’ll face some challenges on it’s own environment. How to keep those VM’s up-to-date with latest patches related to the OS, APPs and AV. Most of our LAB VM’s we give rare attention on updating and reverting back to the previous snapshot. This pose a security risk to the network in case if you’ve been directly connecting them to the production network. Same story can be applied for the production VM’s if you’ve bring them down for weeks time and bring them back!
Microsoft have been offering a solution for this called Virtual Machine Service tool. The tool has the capability to service those VM’s in following status,
- Offline virtual machines in a SCVMM library.
- Stopped and saved state virtual machines on a host.
- Virtual machine templates.
- Offline virtual hard disks in a SCVMM library by injecting update packages.
Now we have come to the version 3.0 of the tool and been promised additional features. If you’re having SCVMM in your environment to manage the VM’s combine with this software tool will provide you automate method of servicing the VM’s.
